A ducted system should make every occupied room feel comfortable, not leave one bedroom stuffy while the lounge feels like an icebox. Knowing how to balance ducted airflow helps create more even temperatures, reduces unnecessary running costs and takes pressure off your heating and cooling system.

Airflow balancing is not simply a matter of opening every vent as far as it will go. Your home’s layout, duct design, zone settings, return-air path and the condition of the system all affect where conditioned air ends up. A few sensible checks can improve comfort straight away, while persistent problems are best assessed by a qualified technician.

What balanced ducted airflow should feel like

Balanced airflow means each room receives an appropriate amount of conditioned air for its size, use and heat load. It does not mean every outlet delivers exactly the same volume of air. A large, west-facing living area with high ceilings will usually need more cooling than a shaded spare room, while bedrooms may need a gentler airflow overnight.

Make only minor changes at a time. Closing an outlet too far can create noise, increase static pressure in the ductwork and push more air into other rooms than intended. It can also reduce the total airflow the indoor fan needs to operate efficiently.

After each adjustment, allow the system to run for at least 20 to 30 minutes with internal doors in their usual positions. Ducted systems supply air to rooms, but that air also needs a route back to the return grille. When doors are closed tightly, pressure can build inside bedrooms and reduce the amount of conditioned air entering them. A reasonable gap under the door, transfer grilles or properly designed return-air pathways can help the system circulate air as intended. Sun-facing rooms often benefit from external shading, quality window coverings and sensible controller scheduling. In winter, draught sealing and insulation can reduce the heating load significantly. System capacity also matters. If a ducted unit is too small for the home, it may struggle in extreme weather no matter how carefully the outlets are adjusted.
